Well, these are some pretty interesting times to live in, especially for those of us who spend a lot of time or do business on the web. It seems that there is at least one or two new AI tool launched every single day if not more. And these days, you don’t even have to know how to code like a pro in order to launch your own. Today’s top is Buy It With ChatGPT and it really does sound interesting. So let’s dive in…
There has been an update to this news just hours after I wrote this. So this post is about OpenAI and Stripe making a deal to offer eCommerce inside ChatGPT. Then this press release came out…
What is Buy It With ChatGPT?

When I first got the email announcing this, that’s exactly what I said, What is Buy It With ChtGPT? But it sure got me to open the email to see what it was all about. So the following is from the announcement…
More than 700 million people turn to ChatGPT each week for help with everyday tasks, including finding products they love. Starting today, we’re taking the first steps toward ChatGPT helping people buy them too—beginning with Instant Checkout, powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol, built with Stripe.
U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users can now buy directly from U.S. Etsy sellers right in chat, with over a million Shopify merchants, like Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx and Vuori, coming soon. Today, Instant Checkout supports single-item purchases. Next, we’ll add multi-item carts and expand merchants and regions.
Yeah I noticed it too. The dreaded em-dash. So, they let ChatGPT wrote the announcement. That’s kind of funny when you think about it.
They started with Etsy. For those that don’t know how big Etsy is, Etsy is a global e-commerce marketplace company with a market capitalization of approximately $7.17 billion as of October 2025, and it generated over $12 billion in Gross Merchandise Sales (GMS) in 2024, connecting millions of active buyers and sellers on its platform. The company connects artisans and sellers of handmade, vintage, and craft supply items with a global audience of buyers, and it operates other marketplaces including Depop and Reverb.
And it’s a big deal for Stripe as well. Stripe is one of the world’s largest private fintech companies, recently valued at over $106 billion. The company’s size is reflected in its processing of $1.4 trillion in payment volume in 2024 and its approximately 8,000 employees worldwide as of mid-2025.
Okay, Enough About Them
What's In It For Me And Why Do I Care?

They are open-sourcing the technology that powers Instant Checkout, the Agentic Commerce Protocol, so that more merchants and developers can begin building integrations. The Agentic Commerce Protocol is an open standard for AI commerce that lets AI agents, people, and businesses work together to complete purchases. They co-developed it with Stripe and leading merchant partners to be powerful, secure, and easy to adopt.
Now instead of ChatGPT just helping you find what to buy, it’s also going to help you buy it, or should I say, Get You To Buy It. So, you’re chatting along discussing ideas with ChatGPT and instead of just telling what a great idea you just had, and instead of would you like me to create a downloadable PDF or Word Doc for that, it’s going to ask me if I want to buy it now?
They made this announcement on September 9th. I’m just a slow to respond. This protocol and the documentation is available here so if you are an interested merchant or developer, you can begin building integrations.
When you’re ready to make your products available for purchase through ChatGPT, you can apply here.
I have to admit I am intrigued and the FOMO is getting to me already. Everyone talks about brand mentions in AI and how to track that, but no one really has a handle on the tracking part because the analytics are not accessible. However, if you are selling products through ChatGPT, that can be tracked.
Having tangible evidence of the value of being found through AI Search Optimization is a gamechanger. At LeadGenerationAndSales.com we will be keeping up with this. We’ve already been very successful at getting our clients mention in AI search results so this is a no-brainer for us to work on.
So How Will Buy It With ChatGPT Work?

Let’s not get too geeky with this, but we do want to understand it whether we are a buyer or a seller, right?
- When someone places an order, ChatGPT sends the necessary details to the merchant’s backend using Agentic Commerce Protocol.
- The merchant accepts or declines the order, processes the payment via their existing provider, and handles fulfillment and customer support exactly as they do today.
- If a merchant already processes payments with Stripe, they can enable agentic payments in as little as one line of code.
- If they use another payment processor, they can still participate in Instant Checkout and accept agentic payments either by using Stripe’s new Shared Payment Token API or adopting the Delegated Payments Spec in the Agentic Commerce Protocol—all without changing their existing payment processor.
Did you understand all of that? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The cool thing is that while some of us want to explore the possibility of selling on ChatGPT, we don’t all have to go out a learn how to code it all. There are plenty of developers who would love to built it for you and I imagine there will be apps that handle most of it before long.
Selling On ChatGPT? Are You Even Going To Be Mentioned?

Up until now, many companies have been pretty slow to adopt an AI Search Optimization strategy. Many have taken the wait and see approach. That includes a lot of SEO agencies. We started working on brand mentions and brand visibility for our clients as soon as ChatGPT was launched and have had some great success with it. The reason I’m saying this is that the sooner you recognize the opportunities presented by AI and associated search platforms, the better off you’ll be.
Don’t wait to see if your competitors start doing it before you do. That isn’t a great strategy. Be forward thinking. Start setting yourself up for some big wins now before you get left behind. One last thing on this… While everyone is scrambling to catch up, they are talking about how many brand mentions you get and how this tool or that tool will track your brand mentions, they are missing one really important aspect of this.
It’s not just about how many times your brand is mentioned in AI. It’s about WHAT AI is saying about your brand when you are mentioned.
Is it mentioning your core values, your mission statement? what differentiates you from your competitors, the benefits you offer your customers, how great your customer service is, that you’re licensed and insured, the awards you’ve won? You have a chance to control that messaging is you do it right. I’d be happy to set up a free 15 minute call with you to explain it or let you ask any questions you have.
